Artist Statement

Sarah Moyer

I am fascinated by the way humanity is connected through struggle. These women represent millions around the world who find commonality in the difficulties that their femininity presents. There is a proverb in Cambodian culture, broh jee-a daw dail meas, srei jee- a daw dail kotong saw, which refers to men as gold and women as white cloth. Thus it is implied that the value of a man is not easily destroyed, whereas a woman is forced to bear her stains. While this issue of inequality has been significantly overcome in the states today, it is still an ever-present issue in many cultures. Trafficking, violence, and exploitation are just a few of the numerous concerns that lurk upon thousands of women. As a viewer you are confronted with the choice to either associate with these presented, or to further dirty the cloth. You may find that a woman living a thousand miles away embodies a voice very similar to your own.

Unfortunately I have extremely bad luck with technology. I recently had my external hard drive recovered and when I was working my way through the images I noticed that some of them had merged themselves together. I was fascinated with how perfectly the colors in the images complimented each other. The two below are both combinations of images from Colorado and Malawi.

i have kind of been on a shooting frenzy lately. the warmer weather is making me feel all sorts of creative! my beautiful friend lauren was so kind as to let me take some pictures of her the other day.

is she not the most photogenic girl you have ever seen? i think it would be impossible to take a bad photo of her.

I love this girl. Lauren showed up at my house today for a photoshoot with no makeup, unbrushed hair...and this is how she looks. Absolutely gorgeous! Not only is she a pretty lady, but she is unbelievably sweet and down to earth. Here are some of the shots from our little trek out in the snow.

we walk throughout each day carrying around pieces of memories that solidify themselves within our minds. some of them good, others more difficult to face. however, we carry these encounters of life with us as we grow. we alter our steps based on them. at times we call on them for a breath of hope, other times they impose on us, taking us by surprise. each sunrise offers us the gift of creation. the ability to fabricate a new memory. one in which we can place elements of goodness upon the life of another. one in which we can turn from the things we once feared. one in which humanity can be restored, to not only ourselves, but to those around us. we can create within our reach a mankind in which the value of an individual is recognized.

Dragonflies

Well I can't sleep...so I thought I might as well write. I recently took the picture below. This leaf amazes me, maybe I am easily fascinated, but if you saw it in in real life I am sure you would be fascinated as well. This leaf appears to be extremely fragile, yet at the same time it is extremely strong. It has been through all of sorts of weather and little pieces of it have broken off here and there, but it has not lost its identity. It is still a leaf, and arguably a more interesting leaf than it has ever been. As we go through life we start to look like this leaf, a little weathered, missing parts of ourselves that we have given away or left behind. We begin to look a little more fragile, we may even lose some of the vibrancy we once had. However, at the same time we do not lose who we are. The shape or for better words "the core" of who we are becomes more noticeable as we travel through the valleys. I love listening to older people talk and I think this is a big reason why. As old age approaches the body becomes more and more fragile, but it seems that the spirit only gets stronger. I have never met an elderly person who is still on the search for who they are. I love that. They are more in tune with the core of who they are rather than running around trying to make themselves into someone they weren't created to be. For me this is inspiration to focus more on the core of who I am. My soul and the God that created it. My body and the things I have will only dissipate and deteriorate with time, yet the soul is eternal.

Housesitting

I would have to argue that house-sitting is the best job. This past week my roommate and I house sat for a family that we babysit for now and then. They are so sweet and have some of the most adorable children. Angela and I decided to use the opportunity to play dress up and do a little photoshoot. Unfortunately we didn't begin till late into the night, so the lighting isn't idea, but they are still sort of fun. Maybe I will post some more later on this week, but for now these are two of my favorites.

I don't typically do many senior portraits, however yesterday was an exception. I took pictures of Mitch, a senior at Olathe Northwest. Mitch is very photogenic, so the shoot was fairly simple. Minus the extreme humidity, the shoot was a rather pleasant adventure.

Each year, the event organizers and a credentialed selection panel choose 18 designers from a large pool of applicants to be featured designers. It is a free event held outdoors in the middle of 18th Street in the Crossroads neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, on the block between Baltimore Avenue and Wyandotte Street. It is no coincidence that the event is held on 18th Street, which has become a hub of art and fashion in Kansas City. My favorite line of the evening, designed by Katie Coble, seriously the most versatile line of clothing ever. Pieces that transformed from tops, to jackets, to bags and more. The options for each piece were endless. A truly unique line.

This summer has been somewhat uneventful in terms of work for my roommate and I. Because of this we decided to make some of our own creations with our free time. Today we did a photo shoot to model the pieces. Angela was the model and I did the photography. All of the headbands and rings you see in the photos were created by us. sToday I went through my portfolios with good intentions to organize them. However, instead of organizing the pieces I have, I went through and photographed several of them against my bedroom wall. The first two pieces I created during a contemporary photo class and the last three are printmaking projects.

Desert Neighbor

Desert Neighbor is another unique and eclectic band that I had the opportunity to photograph this spring. They were generous enough to allow me to play around with some new creative techniques. Together the four members produce some great indie/rock/folk music. Check out their myspace as well. This spring I was blessed with the opportunity to take photos for two great bands. The renderings being one of them. Dan and Sam are cousins who share a similar passion for music. Together they create a unique and soulful sound. Not only are they great musicians, but they are great people as well. Over the past few years I have been lucky enough to witness a beautiful fusion of two cultures. Last summer my sister Ashley married Atirek in Kansas City and six months later they had another wedding in Mumbai, India with his side of the family. Despite the challenges that have come with integrating two worlds, it is obvious that their love for one another can overcome any barrier. They are so special to me and they were gracious enough to take me along with them all the way to India. Here is just a taste of what I captured.

I Create.

It has always fascinated me how ideas come together in artwork. Often times my best concepts seem to be the ones that I scribble down while being inspired by a thought, a story, or even something that I see or an emotion that I encounter during a normal day. Creating is my way of making sense of the things that I am learning. It is more than just a tool to express myself; it is a way in which I begin to understand myself. The following is a series that I created during a digital photography class in order to visually describe my imagination and the ways that my mind and heart connect when creating.
